I’m pretty sure that’s all you need to know. But my team insists we need an actual sales page. If you agree with me, just click the button above to buy your ticket. If you need more than that (weird), keep reading for details on how awesome it’s gonna be.

Build A Business Based On Your Knowledge, They Said…

I don’t know about you, but when I started building my business, I figured it was going to be a piece of cake.

We’ve been promised a 4-hour work week that will give us a freedom lifestyle. The gurus tell us we don’t need any real expertise… and don’t have to do all the hard work of building a brand. All we have to do is create a single information product that we can sell with just the right funnel.

Be honest, you’ve probably heard 857 other catchy slogans that get you believing success is right around the corner.

Although the strategies and tactics are different… every online marketing guru seems to be promising to make it easy to build your online business.

It’s Hard NOT To Imagine A Wildly Successful Future.

The promise of a “proven process” is driven home with a sales page filled with testimonials from people touting their five, six, and seven figure results from following the process.

Reading these sales pages and perusing the social media streams filled with inspirational quotes reinforces the idea that your success is all but guaranteed.

The messaging can make it seem as if your success is all but inevitable.

So You Jumped In With Both Feet Sure That “Investing” In A Step-By-Step, Plug-And-Play Program Would Work...

If you’re anything like me, you bought into the messaging.

Hook. Line. And. Sinker.

Between the sloganeering, inspirational social media posts, case studies, and promises from the gurus, you figured that YOU TOO could build a wildly successful business selling your knowledge.

All it took was parting with a little bit of your hard-earned cash to get one of those gurus as a guide.

And the gurus assured you that you weren’t spending money… you were “investing” in yourself and your future.

So you “invested” in yourself.

Maybe you bought the “step-by-step” process that someone said was a “proven” path to build a course or membership…

Maybe you paid for a fancy coaching certification under the expectation that that’s all you needed to build a successful coaching business…

Or maybe dropped your cash on a “plug-and-play” system to create content or emails or videos or who the hell knows what else.

Okay, let’s be honest… if you’re like so many online business owners, you’ve spent through the nose on multiple courses, memberships, and programs that promised you success.

I’ve got one question for you…

How's that working out for ya?

You don’t have to be a psychic to guess that if you’re on this page there’s a pretty stinking good chance that the BS slogans don’t have you rolling in the Benjamins.

If you’re anything like I was when the same thing happened to me in 2017 and early 2018, you feel alone and maybe a bit ashamed of yourself.

You’re left feeling like something must be wrong with you!

I mean… the process seemed to work for everyone else, so the problem must be you, right?

Let Me Say This LOUD For the people In The Back:

If those courses and membership didn’t work for you, you are not the problem. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.

The truth is if that program didn’t work for you, it doesn’t make you a failure… it makes you (wait for it…) normal.

Wait… what?!?

Yep. “Failure” is the norm. Success is the exception.

While the marketing coaches love touting their dozens or hundreds of success stories, it’s what goes unsaid that is the real problem.

In the information business space, a lot of “marketers” aren’t even trying to collect data on actual results from all their customers. They only publish the success stories.

Not to put too fine a point on it but… there’s a big difference between the two.

But sometimes, the marketing gurus slip. Like the time I heard a marketing leader who has served nearly fifty thousand students brag about having hundreds of success stories.

Let me do the math to make that simple…

That equates to a success rate of about 1% of the students.

Although the success rate may be a bit higher, it’s not like most (or even a significant minority) of the students are succeeding.

I know countless wonderful entrepreneurs who’ve signed up for programs, put in the work, and seen nothing in return.

I know, because I’m one of them. And it had me on the verge of giving up in late 2017… convinced that I was the problem.

Why Are Success Rates So Low?

All the sloganeering and inspirational quotes can’t change the simple truth that building a business is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do.

And not the “pretty” kind of hard that’s being depicted on the ‘Gram. It’s really freaking hard. Like ugly crying, losing sleep, working 18+ hours a day, questioning your sanity, wanting to throw in the towel kind of hard.

All. The. Time.

And just when you think you’ve figured it out… something new pops up to knock you on your ass.

If we’re all honest, a help wanted ad for an online entrepreneur would probably look something like this:

Entrepreneur Wanted

Must be willing to work long hours in isolation at a job that no one in your real life will understand. Expect to worry about work 24/7 and to feel a constant sense of being an imposter or a fraud.

Wages will suck at first, but if you stick with it for a few years you might just make as much as you’re making now. Most candidates will not make it past the phase where wages suck.

Successful candidates must have or quickly acquire proficiency in all areas of marketing, including: content marketing, social media marketing, graphic design, conversion copywriting, paid traffic generation, product development, sales, and more.

Successful candidates must also master the ability to interact with potential and actual clients through public speaking (persuasive and informative), appearing on video, making complicated topics easy to learn, and coaching customers.

But the job is not entirely client facing. To succeed, candidates must be equally willing to do behind-the-scenes tasks such as bookkeeping, accounting, budgeting and money management, information technology management, and dealing with legal requirements.

If you are not a master project manager, you should not apply because the job will entail keeping countless balls in the air at all times. Those afraid of death by context switching need not apply. It’s a common side effect and there is no guarantee it won’t make you go insane.

Successful candidates must also have the ability to make strategic decisions so they can immediately identify what task they should be performing at any given moment without significant external direction.

Candidates who make it past the initial grueling phases will be required to build leadership skills so they can successfully pass tasks on to others.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “Wow! I check all of these boxes!” … chances are, this is not the job for you, especially if you don’t take kindly to being royally humbled.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “What fresh hell is this?” Keep reading. You might be an entrepreneur.

Sound about right? Actually, there are probably countless other skills you’ll need to master beyond what’s listed in that clearly unappealing ad.

Success doesn’t come from mastering any one strategy, tactic, or skill… building a successful business requires a lot from you.

In fact, let’s take a look at what a real case study for online entrepreneurship would look like…

If Case Studies Told The Truth...

Bobby before he built a business...

... and Bobby after.

"Building an online business is just the best ever. Not only have I lost 857 hours of sleep, I've also spent a bajillion dollars for every dollar I made in the first year. My therapist TRIPLED their annual revenue from my business alone. #winning"

You Can Have A Business You Love…

You Just Have To Embrace The Freaking Hard!

Although I’m not going to promise you a four-hour work week, I am here to say that you can build a business that gives you considerably more freedom than any job you could ever hold.

But you should probably adopt Chumbawamba’s Tubthumping as your new battle anthem:

I get knocked down, but I get up again.
You are never gonna keep me down.
I get knocked down, but I get up again.
You are never gonna keep me down.

Because trust me, your business is going to knock you on your ass more than once. If you want the “freedom” lifestyle that all those slogans promise you, you are going to have to get back up on the mat over and over… and over again.

But it isn’t just about getting up when you get knocked down…

You have to be disciplined enough to show up every freaking day even when it doesn’t seem to be doing any good. Because, trust me, there will be plenty of days where it doesn’t seem like you’re making any progress.

You have to learn to focus on the right thing for your business right now. If you’re working on super-ninja retargeting ad strategies before you have an opt-in page that’s optimized for conversions, things are never going to work.

You have to be willing to fail… A LOT — and not take it personally — because you will.

And you have to be willing to keep learning because your business will demand different things from you at different times. The problems you face as a new entrepreneur are very different from the challenges you face as you build out and lead a team.

The path to building a business you love is, counterintuitively, to embrace that it is going to suck for a while.

But Let’s Get Real —
That’s Easier Said Than Done...

It seems simple enough, right? Accept that this is going to be hard.

Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple. Not. At. All.

First, we are constantly barraged with the message that there are easy button solutions that will solve all our problems. And they can suck us in…

Trust me. I know. Because I still get sucked in.

We spin our wheels searching for that magic solution to make it easier. I mean, everyone out there INSISTS it exists. So it must be real, right?

Even though I know there is no easy button, I’ve made the mistake a few times this year of thinking my team and I could simply hire a contractor who would magically solve a problem in our business.

Can you guess how those worked out?

And it’s not just contractors. My team members desperately want to take my credit card away from me because every time I watch a webinar or read a sales page, I’m tempted to believe that this person really does have some “secret” strategy that will change everything.

Spoiler alert…

There are no secrets… at least not ones that will build your business.

Second, because we’ve all been taught that the riches are in the niches, most of the successful marketing coaches are niched to a very specific strategy or tactic.

You have the Instagram instructors… the course creation coaches… the membership masters… the podcasting pro… the boss blogger…

I’m sure you get it (plus, the alliteration was getting kinda hard).

The trouble is that it’s hard to find someone who’s willing to push back against the constant push to focus on just ONE super-niched skill.

#SorryNotSorry to burst the industry’s bubble, but you need more than a course or a membership or a blog or a podcast or fill in the blank product/service/strategy/tactic to build a business.

Uh, a helluva lot more.

But how the hell are you supposed to find someone who’s willing to talk about all the things you need to put together and who isn’t going to feed you some bullsh*t line that this is all going to be easy?

Luckily, you “know a guy.”

You Need Someone Willing To Stand Up For You…

Most teachers in the online marketing space are enamored with the idea of “selling them what they want,” so they keep catering to people wanting things to be easy with their messaging.

Maybe it’s because my time as a federal prosecutor taught me that telling the truth is more important than making money.

Or maybe it’s because my brother taught me that standing up for people you care about isn’t optional… it is required.

Whatever the reason, seeing the constant drumbeat of “easy” pisses me off. I am tired of seeing good entrepreneurs chewed up and spit out by this industry.

That’s why I’m here to tell you about all the things you need to build a successful business and how hard things are going to be… even if it costs me some business.

Contrary to so many people in the online industry, I live by The Stockdale Paradox.

It’s a phrase coined by Jim Collins in his book Good To Great, that refers to the duality that successful business leaders have—they are simultaneously sure of their long-term success and brutally honest about the hell it will take to get there.

Collins recounted a story that Admiral Stockdale shared about the people who made it and those who didn’t as POWs during the Vietnam War. The optimists were broken by the experience because they were constantly let down.

The same is happening in the online marketing space… wonderful entrepreneurs are being broken because the industry is setting up false expectations.

I’m not here for that.

I’m here to tell you the truth. I’m here for your success.

That’s why you’ll never find me sugarcoating business building or marketing.

If you want an entrepreneur event that’s all rah, rah fake inspiration (but no real substance), I am not your guy.

If you are in it to win it when it comes to building your online business and want an event where someone will tell you the unvarnished truth about the hard parts and where you’ll actually learn how to build your business, I’d love for you to join me at…

A 3-Day Virtual Event That Will Teach You What You REALLY Need To Build A Successful Business Instead Of Trying To Convince You There’s An “Easy Button” For Business.

With Your BADA$$ Host…

Bobby Klinck

orange paint

Hey there! I’m a Harvard Law grad turned online entrepreneur. Like so many online entrepreneurs, I started my business with high hopes… and no real marketing experience.

Since I’m a “learner” by nature, I dove into learning ALL the strategies and tactics. I read books, took courses, and even got “certified” as an “inbound” marketer.

And like so many entrepreneurs, the strategies didn’t do me a damn bit of good. Although I knew all the “secret strategies” and fancy tactics the gurus were teaching, my business was a flop… to the tune of being about $30k in the hole my first year in business.

At the beginning of 2018, I decided to give myself ONE LAST chance to try this online business thing… but I decided to do it on my own terms.

Considering that I’ve always been a bit of a renegade and troublemaker, doing it on my terms meant throwing the rulebook out the window.

No more listening to the marketing gurus pushing their secrets… no more curated authenticity… and no more constantly funneling my people.

Instead, I focused on actually being me… connecting with my audience (instead of always trying to convert them)… having fun in my business… and being the #RadicalGiver that I’ve always been in my personal life.

And a weird thing happened. My business took off.

In the last 8 months of 2018, I built a quarter of a million dollar business selling something that no one wants and that conventional online marketing wisdom would say is nearly unsellable — legal templates.

All because I said “screw it” and built a business MY way. These days, I break more marketing “rules” than I follow.

People tune in to hear me “ruin” marketing, go on my #GuruRants, and pull back the curtain on what’s really going on in the online marketing space.

In the process, I help other entrepreneurs discover how to build a business they actually WANT and that is fun for them instead of feeling like they have to follow the rules.

There Are Some Serious Problems With MOST Entrepreneur Events

As an extroverted entrepreneur, I LOVE attending in-person events, and I met some of my closest business besties at those events.

The trouble is that once you’ve seen behind the curtain, you tend to notice some issues with those events.

To begin, regardless of how they are pitched, most of these events are really just fluff-filled sales pitches. And they use all the traditional tricks of the trade to get you to buy:

When they make the offer, they encourage people to join quickly with bonuses and other special incentives to be one of the first to buy… all so they can get their core fans running to the back of the room to join. That creates peer pressure because it seems like everyone else is doing it!

The tactics work. And I’m speaking from personal experience.

In 2019, I signed up for over $20k in programs at live events that were really irrelevant to my business because I got swept up in the excitement.

Now, I’m all for selling stuff. I am running a business after all.

My problem with traditional events isn’t that they include a sales pitch. The problem is, as my friends in Texas might say, that these events are all hat and no cattle. They are big on the hype and sales pitch but don’t deliver much REAL value.

Call me crazy, but if you’re paying to go to an event (or get it as a bonus for buying something else), I tend to think the primary and overriding goal of the event should be to deliver you value.

Switching Events To Virtual Showed Us Which Hosts Were Skinny-Dipping!

One of my favorite quotes is from Warren Buffett, who said: “When the tide goes out, you discover who’s been swimming naked.” It’s a fun quote that embodies the idea that when times get tough, you actually discover who’s been doing things right… and who hasn’t.

Well, the shift to virtual events as a result of #StupidCovid exposed the problems with these entrepreneur events and showed us who’s been skinny-dipping.

As entrepreneurs shifted their presentations from live stages to Zoom, the problems with entrepreneur events came into focus.

With the attendees at home (rather than all together with the music and energy), attendees started to notice that they were merely non-actionable “fluff-fests.”

The good news was that the shift to virtual gave people the chance to reassess how we serve our customers through live events…

…and some of us jumped at the chance to make events better!

WE DO EVENTS DIFFERENTLY...

As a rebel at heart, I threw out the ridiculous tactics that most people in the industry used when we were designing last year’s edition of BOM Live.

Instead of a sales-driven event, we designed the event to deliver value to the people who attended. That included:
