Many entrepreneurs are trying to show up a particular way in their business because they think that's how they're supposed to show up. But if you’re trying to be a certain way when you’re not, you’re going to face a lot of challenges.
Way too many entrepreneurs are wearing masks in their business. They’re putting on a front for their business. They’re not being themselves even though they use words like “authenticity.”
I’m here to give you a little tough love: stop wearing masks and trying to be someone other than who you are. BE YOURSELF.
The Dangers of Trying to Be Someone You’re Not
So many people are trying to show up a particular way in their business because they think that’s how they’re supposed to show up. But if you’re trying to be a certain way when you’re not, you’re going to face a lot of challenges.
- You won’t be happy with what you’re doing
- You won’t like your business
- It won’t result in the long-term success
- People aren’t getting to know you
- You’ll be exhausted
You shouldn’t be chasing whims. You shouldn’t be doing things because you think that’s what your audience expects of you, or you think that’s what will make them like you. It’s almost like telling a series of lies—you have to remember all of them.
But if you’re being you, you don’t have to remember the mask and how you showed up. You can come as you are and give your honest opinions.
Bring Your Personality
The truth is that there will be people who don’t like you. Some people will say mean things about you and that will hurt. There’s no way around that.
But the best way you can serve the people who are right for you is to just be yourself all the time. Bring your personality to things and don’t say things just because you think people expect that from you.
If you’re snarky, don’t try to mask it because you fear people won’t react well to it. Wouldn’t you rather have a business where you can actually have a good time and not have to pretend to be someone else because you think that’s what would click with your audience?
If you want long-term success, be authentic. And we’re not talking about the fake authenticity that we hear all over the place. We’re not talking about curated authenticity where your house is always clean and everything works perfectly. That’s not being authentic.
Being authentic means sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s about sharing when you’re struggling with things, when you’re in a bad place, and things like that. We all go through struggles and you need to be that kind of authentic to your audience. That’s the best way you can serve your people.
Take Off Your Masks
Be the real you and take off your mask. Stop pretending to be someone you’re not in your business and go ruffle some feathers today. It’ll help you over the long term.
